2013 Bourbon County Barleywine

A review for this beer is long overdue. It took my recent share, and then two more of these to finally convince myself this had to be put up. I had this in a side-by-side with King Henry (the best BW I had to date) and it was a lot closer than I ever imagined.

Pours a dark mahogany color with a very thin amber head. The smell on this one is so nice; bourbon, vanilla, toffee, caramel. It’s really just a mix of everything you would want in a barleywine, but somehow all the notes compliment each other nicely, that its not too much. The taste, out-of-this-word! This is the perfect barleywine, there is nothing to say to this. I have put it against 2014 and its a completely different beer, fresh and aged. It has a nice sweetness with the toffee and caramel upfront, but not cloying, the perfect amount. I have also had this against Aaron and Kuhnhenn, and this just takes the  BA barleywine to another level. I have not had ADWTD yet, so that is yet to see, but I don’t know how you can top this. The only reason it doesn’t get a perfect score is because it is just below King Henry (99/100).
